Find out what motivates your members. According to leadership-central.com, there are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivations come from within a person. The need to gain acceptance, a sense of honor, the drive for independence, and, a desire for social status are deep-seated and powerful sources of motivation.
Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is something that comes from outside; essentially, a reward that is given in exchange for a satisfactory or outstanding performance. One obvious example of an external motivation is money.
Every team member is different. They have individual needs and wants that, when met, will encourage them to perform well for the team.
Assess your beliefs and expectations. It’s easy to disconnect yourself from your team members if you’re the manager. Check whether what you’re asking them to do on a daily basis is still feasible and make the necessary adjustments. Don’t overwork your employees or else you’ll burn them out.
Make sure your team is content. A satisfied employee is more productive and efficient with their work. Survey their gratification when it comes to their environment, deadlines, and equipment to name a few.
After ensuring your team’s satisfactions are met and maintained, adjust your leadership methods. If your team doesn’t handle pressure well, or if they’re not comfortable being checked on every hour, change your managing style to one agreeable to their terms.
Remember that although you’re the manager, the team behind you is your ticket to success. The product is as good as the hands that worked together to create it.
